Who we are

Center Director

Prof. Mami Tanaka (Vice President for Promotion of Diversity/ Professor, Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering & Graduate School of Engineering

I strive to create an environment where everyone can contribute to their fullest potential. Click here to read my message.

Center Vice Director

Prof. Masayuki Akiyama (Graduate School of Science)

I want to make our university a place where every TU member can grow and demonstrate their diverse strength. As a black hole explore, I will continue searching for an origin of diversity in the universe. It is a mystery to see how the world had been created starting from simple particles according to the physical laws.

Center Vice Director

Prof. Kazuyo Matubae (Graduate School of Environmental Studies)

Center Vice Director

Prof. Narie Sasaki

Throughout my career, I have conducted research in the life sciences at various universities while also actively promoting support for women researchers and advancing DEI initiatives, including Gendered Innovations. Promoting DEI in higher education is one of the most effective strategies for strengthening research capabilities and driving scientific and technological progress.

Leveraging my strength in “connecting people,” I hope to work together with all of you to deliver swift and bold transformation, in line with the spirit of “MOVE AND SHAKE,” articulated by our university as an International University of Excellence. I look forward to collaborating with you in many forms in the days ahead!

Senior Assistant Professor

Sunhee Lee (PhD.)

Since 2022, I have been working as center faculty who is in charge with the center events/actives etc. (basically everything).
I am originally from Soul, Korea, and came to Sendai, Japan as an international student about 30 years ago. During the time of working with my PhD, I got married, had children. Now I work at the center as a full-time and also take care of my youngest.
My academic field is anthropology focusing on immigrants, gender, and multicultural issues. I will make our center to be a place for everyone to come together and share each other’s voice.

Specially Appointed Assistant Professor (Research)

Soto Tsuruta

I joined the center in 2025, and I’m in charge of the classes, Science Ambassadors (SA), and the DEI Lounge, etc. As a historian of science, I have been thinking about the relationship between science, technology, and society that ‘leaves no one behind.’ DEI starts with listening to each and every one of you. If you have any concerns on campus, please feel free to let us know.

Machi Inomata

I am mainly working for the Science Ambassadors Program, and taking care of our website, and challenging something new every day. I am busy working and taking care of my family, but still thinking about what I can do for developing DEI, and how to raise my child without bias. I hope I will figure it out in the near future.
