Diversity for Our Future

Tohoku University has been committed to its foundational “Open Door” policy and “Research First”, accepting female students to be the first college students in Japan, and accepting international students who became prominent in different areas.  Among those international students, Lu Xun, a Chinese literary giant, and Ki-rim Kim, a Korean poet and literature critic are well known for their achievements.  Ki-rim Kim influenced Korean modern literacy in the 1930s, and one of Ki-rim’s poems, “Sea and Butterfly” is also used in the textbook in Korea. Moreover, Eui-kyung Shin who became the first female congressman in Korea under the U.S. military control, and received a National award in 1990, had been admitted to the law school in Tohoku University in 1927 when female students were not allowed to go to university in Korea.

Our “Open Door” policy, which is about diversity at Tohoku University, influenced Asian modernism during the 20th century.  We will continue working for diversity that we have been carrying on from the “Open Door” spirit, and try to make our school open to more diverse people.
