Message from President Hideo Ohno

Tohoku University advancing to the next stage in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We announced its “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Promotion Declaration” on April 5th, 2022 as a new phase for promoting gender equality and diversity, and on June 20, we had a DEI Promotion Declaration Symposium.  At that event, we received many encouraging messages to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion in education, research, and work from all over the world.  Here is a message from President Hideo Ohno, expressing his hope and wish toward DEI.

“Live as Who You Are” – Toward to True Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

President Hideo Ohno

(Tohoku University)

For more than 20 years, we have engaged in promoting and hiring more female researchers.  In 2001, the percentage of female faculty was less than 6 %, but in 2022, as a result of these efforts, it increased to approximately 20 %.  At the beginning, the childcare supporting program was available only for female researchers, but now it is available for male researchers, too, and will be for other gender minorities.  In addition, we received the 4th Brilliant Female Researchers Award (The Jun Ashida Award) from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in 2022.  We are still on the way to gender equality, and determine that we will put more efforts on solving “gender disparity” in Tohoku University.

In April, 2022, we announced its “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Promotion Declaration” (aka. DEI Declaration).  This is our commitment to enhance DEI, coordinate policies, and create a truly inclusive environment in which all members of Tohoku University respect each other and are respected at the same time.  As a world leading institution, we should create an environment where people are able to perform the best so that they can have creative and excellent research results that lead toward innovation.  In order to create this kind of environment, each member should advance their awareness of DEI.

It has been 110 years since we accepted the first female college students at Tohoku University.  Let’s work together to create a truly inclusive environment where each member can be proud as a Tohoku University member.
