Since its founding in 1907, Tohoku University has accumulated knowledge and returned it to society through the principles of ‘Research First,’ ‘Open Doors,’ and ‘Practice-oriented Research and Education.’ More recently, Tohoku University was accredited as Japan’s first ‘University for International Research Excellence,’ and we continue to take on challenges in unexplored areas as we aim to become a world-class research and education hub.
To solve the complex challenges of our time and create true innovation, ‘Diversity of Knowledge,’ where people of different backgrounds and perspectives come together, is essential. Seeing things from multifaceted perspectives frees us from unconscious biases and is the foundation for realizing the pursuit of universal truth in a purer form, which is the very essence of a university.
However, when we candidly assess the current situation, despite our numerous efforts to date, it is evident that the realization of diversity across all aspects of research and education remains a work in progress.
Given this fact, Tohoku University is now embarking on a new challenge to accelerate the realization of ‘Diversity of Knowledge’ and fundamentally transform the nature of our organization: we are establishing additional professorships for female researchers and conducting an open call to fill those positions.
Having outstanding female researchers participate at the decision-making level and open up new paradigms is an essential driving force for Tohoku University to truly lead the world. Furthermore, it will inspire the next generation and help guide the female researchers who follow.
